Dhaniya (coriander in English) is a pleasant, aromatic spice, used since ancient times in cooking as well as in various traditional medicines. It is a dried seed which is plump and brown in colour. It bears essential oils that lend to the flavour of the dishes while cooking.

Dhaniya is a common household spice powder that is used in pickles,chutneys, stews, curries, marinades and in sausages. It is a vital ingredient in preparing powder of rasam, sambar, garam masala, kuruma, morkuzhambu, soup and gravy.

Along with dill and fennel, dhaniya seeds are employed as a carminative and digestive ingredient in a variety of gripe water preparations.
